Edward and his brother Lindsay built the maze in 1977 at Symonds Yat near Ross-on-Wye in Monmouthshire to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The two metre high hedges take six weeks to trim - and the sunny side of the hedge gets a second cut later in the year. The maze is arranged in seven concentric octagons and the shortest of 12 routes to the centre is 180 metres, but unwary visitors may discover 13 other routes which are dead ends.
